RESOURCEful People – Kim and Ta’naja (RRC)
“I started using alcohol when I was 21 years old, and now I’m 42. I was court ordered to go to RRC treatment in 2003. I had a hard time staying sober, but kept coming back and it worked.
“The RRC groups and the counselors were very supportive. I put my counselor through hell but she hung with me, and I thank her for that. The good thing about living in RRC Housing was sticking together. I believe that if you see a person fall down, you need to pick them up. Don’t criticize them. Nobody’s perfect. Keep coming back. It works.
“RRC gives you more freedom than most treatment programs. They put the responsibility on you, and that’s a good thing because that way you learn to manage yourself and get back to reality. It’s up to you.
“I graduated from RRC in November 2005. Now I am on my own, staying in sober housing and doing what my probation officer wants me to. Ta’naja was born on September 15. She is my first and only child. I still haven’t quite got the hang of being a mom, but I’m taking it day by day. I am working with Project Child and hope to become a successful mom and a successful person. I am looking for a permanent job and would like to go to school and become a beautician.”
